St. Gregory's Today

St. Gregory The Great Church also serves an important purpose within the larger parish as Mary, Mother of God’s arts and cultural center. The practice of this church has historically had a heavy emphasis on the role of sacred art and music in Christian religious practice and carries that emphasis to this day through free, donation-based classes and workshops in the fine arts led by artists in residence at the church. Along with this, St. Gregory Church maintains a rich intellectual tradition with readings and analyses of contemporary or historical Christian literature and poetry with theological scholars in residence. Today, even the church itself speaks to the mission of spreading the Christian message through sacred art in its preservation of the beautiful Gothic Revival architecture – featuring the woodwork of early 20th-century German artisans that line its construction – melding the work and population of its current congregation with the church’s historical architectural tradition.

The items above depict part of St. Gregory's unique approach to evangelization and faith, emphasizing the role of both sacred art and music respectively in Catholic practice and veneration. Beyond just the study and appreciation of these forms, incorporation of the community into Catholic artistic-religious practice allows for St. Gregory to carve out a niche for itself in a changing religious landscape. While all three parish churches offer choral masses, St. Gregory hall specifically attempts to enhance their liturgy with choral music, harkening back to a foundational model of choral music, the Gregorian chant. Boasting multiple artist in residence programs, the church continues to draw Andersonville creatives who seek both the spiritual and artistic fulfillment offered by St. Gregory today.
